Handicap International (HI) is a not for profit international non-governmental organization working in the field of disabilities. Since its creation in 1982, HI has set up multidisciplinary programmes in cooperation with local and international non-governmental organizations, disabled persons' organizations, local representatives and multilateral agencies. HI approach is community - based and inclusive.

Our branch opened in Montreal (Canada) in 2003. We are part of an international network that manages and supports nearly 250 projects in more than 60 countries worldwide. The vision of HI is to create social changes that will ensure disabled people, mutilated by the war, or natural disasters, affected by disease or poverty their inclusion as citizens with equal opportunities and full access to participation. In order to do so, we recruit professional Canadians to work in the field, raise funds and monitor our current projects in Mozambique and Angola, which are financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Canadian Auto Workers Union Social Justice Fund. We are also running education and outreach programmes to raise awareness and inform the Canadian public about the causes and effects of disabilities.
Over the years, Handicap International has become a standard-setting organization for mines. It is also one of the six NGO founders of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1997.
